Schritt für Schritt Guide
If you are moving abroad from Berlin or if you had your secondary residence in the capital and are now cancelling it you need to deregister your residence. You can do this at the earliest one week before your planned move-out or within 14 days after your move-out.
If you have already left for a longer period of time and only now realized that your residence deregistration was not done in time, then in most cases this is also not a problem. In our guide and in our FAQs we have gone into this in more detail and explain how you can still receive your deregistration confirmation.
You can find detailed instructions on how to deregister your residence in Berlin in our guide. The following to-dos can give you an overview.
You need to book an appointment at your local citizen’s office in Berlin. You can find a list of all citizen’s offices in Berlin here (link to list below).
You can book an appointment with the city of Berlin by calling the Bürgertelefon. However, you may have difficulties with English or another language, as there are often language barriers with the staff who do not necessarily speak your native language or English. You can also book the appointment online. This function is not always available without errors, because often the appointments are unavailable for a long time. If you have enough time to regularly check for free appointments yourself, this option will certainly present you with fewer language challenges and you will avoid being stuck in a telephone queue.
At your appointment, you will then have to bring the forms of the city of Berlin, filled out in German, and give them to the appropriate employee. If everything is correctly filled out and prepared, you will receive your original deregistration confirmation at the end of the appointment.
If you have difficulties filling out German forms, can’t get a timely appointment with the city of Berlin, are already abroad, or if you just like it a bit faster and more convenient, you can also have the deregistration of your residence in Berlin done online through us.
There is not only one central citizen’s office in Berlin that takes care of residence deregistrations. Each district has at least one office, often there are several. You can find a list of all offices that handle deregistrations here:
I don’t care about the location, I want the appointment as soon as possible

When you leave the German capital, there’s of course a lot more to take care of than just getting the deregistration confirmation. Nevertheless, it is important not to forget this document in all the chaos a move brings with it, because in many cases it helps you to save costs. It makes it easier to terminate contracts and the deregistration confirmation is indispensable when it comes to proving that you no longer have to pay taxes in Germany.
We have created a more detailed overview here (link to the checklist) so that you don’t have any unpleasant surprises when the moving chaos starts and you are well prepared and know what you have to think about and when.
In addition to residence deregistration (also completely online), we can help you with the following:
