Step by step Guide

When do I have to deregister my residence in Düsseldorf?

If you move abroad from the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia or no longer use your secondary residence in Düsseldorf, you must deregister your residence. You can do this at the earliest one week before you plan to move out or within 14 days after you move out.

If you have already moved away for some time, but you have just realized that you did not deregister your residence in time, then in most cases this is not a problem. In our guide and in our FAQs we explain how you can still receive your deregistration confirmation.

How can I deregister my residence in Düsseldorf?

A detailed guide on how to deregister your residence in Düsseldorf is provided in our guide with all the information you need. You can get an overview here.

You need to book an appointment at your local Bürgerbüro in Düsseldorf. You can find a list of all Bürgerämter in Düsseldorf here (link to list below).

You can either book the appointment by phone with the city of Düsseldorf itself (however, you may have difficulties with English or another language, since not all employees of the city can help you in a foreign language). Or you can book the appointment online. This is less of a language challenge, but you may find that all appointments are booked up or that the next available appointment will not be for a few weeks.

Once you have booked an appointment, you will need to bring the City of Düsseldorf forms filled out in German and give them to the staff member. If everything is filled out and prepared correctly, you will receive your cancellation confirmation at the end of the appointment.
If you have difficulties with filling out German forms, can’t get a timely appointment with the city of Düsseldorf, are already abroad, or if you just like it a bit faster and more convenient, you can also have the deregistration of your residence in Düsseldorf done online through us.

Citizens’ Offices of the City of Düsseldorf

There is not only one central contact point in Düsseldorf that takes care of the deregistration of your residence. Responsible for the deregistration of your residence are the so-called citizens’ offices. A list of all citizen’s offices that handle deregistrations is here:

What you have to consider when moving out of Düsseldorf

You have decided to leave the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and now you have a lot of things to do. You should plan the deregistration of your residence from the beginning, because in many cases it helps you to save costs. For the termination of contracts regardless of the contract period this document is essential and it is indispensable when it comes to prove that you no longer have to pay taxes in Germany.

We have created a more detailed overview here (link to the checklist) so that you don’t have any unpleasant surprises when the moving chaos starts and you are well prepared and know what you have to think about and when.

How else we can help you

In addition to residence deregistration (also completely online), we can help you with the following:

  • Cancellation of contracts
  • Set up a mail forwarding order
  • Terminate child benefit payments
  • Car deregistration
  • Business deregistration
