Step by step Guide

When do I have to deregister my residence in Munich?

If you move abroad from Munich or close your secondary residence here, you have to deregister your residence. You can do this at the earliest one week before you plan to move out or within 14 days after you move out.

If you have already left the Bavarian capital for some time, but have only just realized that you did not deregister your residence in time, then in most cases this is not a problem. In our guide and in our FAQs we have compiled how you can still receive your deregistration confirmation.

How can I deregister my residence in Munich?

Our guide offers you detailed instructions on how to officially deregister your residence in Munich. The following steps can give you an overview:

You need to make an appointment at the Bürgeramt in Munich that is responsible for you. You can find a list of Munich citizens’ offices that take care of residence deregistration here (link below).

You can either book the appointment by phone with the city of Munich (however, you may have difficulties with English or another language, as there are often language barriers with the staff). Or you can book the appointment online. This feature is not always available without errors, but it presents you with fewer language challenges and you avoid being stuck in a phone queue. Your appointment may not take place for a few weeks, as the Bürgerämter unfortunately have to deal with staff shortages and therefore the waiting time for a personal appointment is prolonged.

You will have to bring the forms filled out in German to your appointment in the Bavarian capital and give them to the responsible employee. If everything is correctly filled out and prepared, you will receive your deregistration confirmation at the end of the appointment.
If you have difficulties filling out the forms, for example, because you do not speak German, do not have a timely appointment in Munich, are already abroad, or if you simply like it a bit faster and more convenient, you can also complete the deregistration of residence in Munich online through us.

What you have to consider when you move away from Munich

When you turn your back on the Bavarian capital, there is of course much more to do than just organizing the deregistration confirmation. In many cases, however, it helps you to save costs, simplifies the termination of contracts and is indispensable when it comes to proving that you no longer have to pay taxes in Germany.

We have created a more detailed overview here (link to the checklist) so that you can keep track when the moving chaos starts and you are well prepared and know what you have to think about when and what you should pay attention to.

How else we can help you

In addition to residence deregistration (also completely online), we can help you with the following:

  • Cancellation of contracts
  • Set up a mail forwarding order
  • Terminate child benefit payments
  • Car deregistration
  • Business deregistration
